Voter Registration

New residents may register to vote at any Secretary of State branch office, at the County or City Clerk's office, online atRegisterToVote Secretary of State Register to Vote, or by filling out this form and returning it to the local clerk at least 15 days prior to an election. You MUST register in-person at your City Clerk's office with proof of residency if you wish to register 14 days or less before an election. Your City Clerk's office is open the Saturday prior to each election from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.  Registration is permanent, provided you maintain residency requirements as provided by statute. Voters registered by the 30th day preceding an election are eligible to vote in that election.

To be eligible to register to vote you must be:

  • A Michigan resident (at the time you register) and a resident of your city or township for at least 30 days (when you vote)
  • A United States citizen
  • At least 17.5 years old (18 years of age when you vote)
  • Not currently serving a sentence in jail or prison

Can I vote as a student?

 All students who are at least 18 years of age on or before Election Day may vote as long as they meet all other eligibility requirements. 

  • If you are a resident of Michigan, college and university students can register to vote at their permanent home or campus address. HOWEVER, if you do decide to register at your school address, be aware that it will automatically update your driver’s license address as well.
  • If you are a resident of Michigan but go to school outside of Michigan, register at your home address to vote in Michigan elections.
  • If you are not a resident of Michigan but go to school here, you may register at your school address to vote in Michigan. 

Moving and Name Changes

Moving within the city or a name change requires that you re-register at the city offices or Secretary of State. If you have any questions regarding whether you are qualified to register to vote in the city, please contact the City Clerk at 586-727-7571, or you may check your voter registration and precinct information on the Michigan Secretary of State's website.
